Lanka's Music Maestro Pandit W. D. Amaradeva on Wednesday (05)
celebrated his 85th birthday at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa
Performing Arts Theatre. "Amaradeva, Yesterday - Today - Tomorrow",
was a grand felicitation ceremony organized to felicitate Pandith W.D.
Amaradeva and to mark his 85th birthday and attended by a large number
of artistes. The Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa lso attended the
felicitation ceremony.Coca-Cola Beverages Sri Lanka Limited partnered with Star Events headed by SudarmaNetchikumara in consultation with MCNS Director General Lakshman Hulugalle organized this grand felicitation ceremony..
On Wednesday morning a large group
gathered at his residence to wish him on his 85th Birthday and also to
wish his beloved wife Wimala Amaradeva whose birthday also
coincidentally falls on the same day. Among those who arrived were
Minister of Culture and Aesthetic Affairs, T.B. Ekanayake.
Born on 5th December 1927 in Moratuwa,
Pandith Amaradeva is a Sri Lankan vocalist and musical composer. His
creations cut across over five generations of Lankan classical music
lovers in their mass appeal and uniqueness. His music came to reflect an
entire philosophy, reflective of the spirit of a nation.
Pandit Amaradeva has been the recipient
of numerous awards including the Philippine Ramon Magsaysay Award
(2001), Indian Padma Sri Award and Sri Lankan "President's Award of Kala
Keerthi" (1986) and Deshamanya Award (1998). Pandit Amaradeva is also
the music composer of Maldivian National Anthem. He has composed music
for ballet, film, theatre, radio and television, and has sung over one
thousand songs.
