Sri Lanka's estate workers call for a restructuring of their salaries

Dec 03, Colombo: Estate sector workers in Sri Lanka have called on the government to take measures to restructure their salary system.
The All Ceylon Estate Workers' Union says the authorities need to implement a system where the current daily pay system in the estate sector is converted into a monthly pay system.
The Union has sent a letter to Labor Minister Gamini Lokuge requesting the change.
The estate workers' union in the letter has noted that the daily wage of an estate sector worker is Rs. 360 and that a decision was taken last year to increase the daily wage to Rs. 515.
However, the union has stated that only 35 percent of the estate workers receive this Rs. 515 daily wage.
The union has pointed out that there are some 500,000 estate workers in the country and addressing their grievances was important.
Therefore, the All Ceylon Estate Workers' Union has said that making a monthly payment as opposed to a daily wage would be more beneficial to the estate sector employees.
