Sinhala students leaving tension stricken Jaffna University in Northern Sri Lanka

 
Dec 02, Jaffna: Sources from Jaffna University of Sri Lanka say that the students of the majority Sinhala community have begun to leave the tension stricken university in the Tamil dominated city.
Teachers and students have decided to continue their agitations demanding the release of student leaders arrested by the police, and Tamil students are planning to boycott classes until the arrested students will be released, sources say.
Academics and students have been on strike since last Wednesday when the police dispersed a demonstration using minimal power.
Police have arrested four student leaders to question regarding the subversive acts in the university.
The students are being interrogated over a fire-bombing of an office of a Tamil political party and organizing events to commemorate the banned terrorist group's Martyrs' Day last week which is illegal under country's Terrorism Prevention laws.
Police say security has been tightened in the university and investigations are underway.
